Reginald de Mohun II, Lord Mohun

The manor sometime belonged to a certain Reginald de Mohun, to him and his heirs in fee, who gave it to William, his younger son, and the heirs of his body. The said William had two daughters, viz.—Mary and Eleanor; Eleanor was espoused to one John de Carru and they had a son, Nicholas, who died without issue. The other daughter Mary was espoused to John de Meryet, and had a son Henry, who died without issue. Through such failure of issue, the manor ought to revert to one John de Mohun as kinsman and heir of the said Reginald. From the said Reginald the right of reversion of the said manor descended to John his son and heir, and from him to John his son, and from the said John son of John son of John to John his son and heir who now claims; he is aged 40 years and more.

SIR REYNOLD6 DE MOHUN II (Reynold5, William4, William3, William2, William1), son of (5) Reynold5 I, Earl of Somerset and (GB-3) Alice (de BRIWERE), was born circa 1206[1], and died on 20 Jan. 1258[1]. He married (XQ-5) HAWISE FITZ GEOFFREY, daughter of (XQ-2) Geoffrey, Earl of Essex and (L-20) Aveline (de CLARE), who died before 1243[1]. [5, 12, 9]

Reginald de Mohun was a ward of Henry FitzCount, son of the Earl of Cornwall then of William Briwerre. The king maintained archers and horsemen in Dunster soon afterwards. In 1242 and 1252 Reginald was Justice of Forests south of the Trent and Henry III gave him the right to hold a weekly market and free warren in Dunster, the manor of Ottery in Devon and Whichford in Warwickshire and forest hunting rights in Somerset. In 1254 Reginald gave 50 marks to St. Peters, Bath for the soul of his son John and founded Newenham Priory on the Devon/Somerset border.

Reginald was earl of Somerset when he died in 1258.
