Born in New Haven, graduated Yale College 1726, called to the ministry, took charge of Congregational Church in North Groton (now Ledyard), Connecticut. Convinced that his orders were invalid, he separated from his congregation and sailed to England, where he was ordained for the Church of England by the Bishop of London in 1734. He returned as a missionary for the Venerable Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. He helped establish a number of Anglican congregations in Connecticut, including one near his old parish. In 1753 he took charge of Trinity Church in New Haven and in 1763 he accepted the charge of Grace Church in Rye, New York, where he died on September 22, 1764. Other children included Hannah Punderson (1733-1775), wife of Solomon Avery, Clarina Punderson (1739-?), wife of Basil Bartow, and Sylvia Punderson (1741-1771), first wife of the Rev. John Beardsley.

A biographical sketch can be found in Franklin Bowditch Dexter, "Biographical Sketches of the Graduates of Yale College," Vol. I (New York: Henry Holt, 1885), pp. 336-338. He is also mentioned in numerous works about the Anglican Church in Connecticut.
