About Robert "Lord of Bowridge Hill" Greene, Sr.

English Origins Compiled by James H. Wright

Descendents of John Greene of Quidnessett should refer to the work of Lara La Mance* (Lora, Laura, Lamance) and/or George Sears Greene*. Both authors must have spent a considerable amount of money having their respective Greene roots traced in England. Although George Sears Greene was having the ancestors of John Greene of Warwick researched while Lara La Mance was interested in those of John Greene of Quidnessett, as will be seen later, they both arrived at a common ancestor in two(?) generations.

Both authors claim to have traced their ancestry to Sir Henry Greene of Boketon, who lived during the middle part of the 14th century, and under King Edward III, became the Lord Chief Justice of England.

Apparently not satisfied to be descended from such an imminent ancestor, Lara La Mance attempts to trace the family origins back to the beginning of the 14th century, and by following several conjugal lines, to claim descent from Charlemagne, Alfred the Great, and William the Conqueror. Romantic reading as this may be, it should be taken with a grain of salt for the proof is tenuous.

The line of descent from the 14th century Lord Chief Justice, Sir Henry Greene, to Robert Greene of Gillingham "has been difficult to trace because the descent was not through 'heir-at-law' but through younger Sons of the family," according to Walter and Ella Greene*, but "suggest a connection." It would appear therefore, that descendents of either John Greene of Quidnessett or John Greene of Warwick should be cautious about claiming descent from Sir Henry Greene.

The following information about Robert Greene of Gillingham is from Walter and Ella Greene and is based on Parish records: Robert Greene purchased the estate of Bowridge Hill, in the Parish of Gillingham, in Dorsetshire, England. He appears in the Subsidy Rolls of 1543, 1545, 1547, and 1558. He had two daughters and three Sons. Alice Anne i. Peter who succeeded to the estate and died May 1583. ii. Richard - who succeeded to the estate on the death of his brother. He made his will in 1606 and died in 1608. He was the grandfather of John Greene of Warwick, R.I.

iii John Greene (12) He was the great grandfather of John Greene of Quidnessett, R.I. His name appears in the Parish registers. He is named in his brother Peter's will as follows: "item. I gyve to my brother John Greene my done gelginge." He died in 1560. He had three sons: Robert of Langham, Jeremy of Gillingham, and

HENRY GREENE (13) who seems to have lived some distance from the old home. He died suddenly August 22, 1578. He had two sons: Thomas of Wyke and
