ROGER [III] de Tosny, son of RAOUL [IV] Seigneur de Tosny & his wife Adelisa of Huntingdon ([1104]-after 29 Sep 1158). His parentage is recorded by Orderic Vitalis[65]. In prison 1136/37. Henry II King of England confirmed the property of Conches abbey, including donations by "Rogeris senior de Toenio et filius eius Radulfus senex et Radulphus juvenis filius predicti Radulphi senex et Roger filius Radulphi juvenis", by charter dated 1165 or [1167/73][66]. The 1157 Pipe Roll records "Rogo de Toeni" in Norfolk and Suffolk, "in Holcha"[68].

m (before 9 Aug 1138) GERTRUDE [Ida] de Hainaut, daughter of BAUDOUIN III Comte de Hainaut & his wife Yolande van Geldern. The Chronicon Hanoniense refers to one of the daughters of "Balduinus comes Hanoniensis" & his wife as wife of "domino de Thoenio", in a later passage naming their children "Radulphum primum [filium Rogerum], Rogerum secundum et Balduinum tercium et Gaufridum quartum clericum"[69]. The Testa de Nevill includes a writ of King John dated 1212 which records that Henry I King of England had granted "xx libratas terre in Bercolt" in Norfolk to "Rogero de Tooni…in maritagio cum filia comitis de Henou"[70]. The primary source which confirms her name has not yet been identified.

Roger [III] & his wife had four children:

1. RAOUL [V] de Tosny (-1162). The Chronicon Hanoniense names (in order) "Radulphum primum [filium Rogerum], Rogerum secundum et Balduinum tercium et Gaufridum quartum clericum" as the children of "[Rogerum] domino de Thoenio" & his wife[71]. Robert of Torigny records the death in 1162 of "Radulfus de Toene"[72]. m (after 1155) MARGUERITE de Beaumont, daughter of ROBERT [II] Earl of Leicester & his wife Amice de Gaël ([1125]-after 1185). Robert of Torigny refers to the wife of "Radulfus de Toene" as "filia Roberti comitis Leccestriæ" but does not name her[73]. The Rotuli de Dominabus of 1185 records “Margareta de Tony…lx annorum” and her land “in Welcumestowe"[74]. Raoul [V] & his wife had [two] children:

a) ROGER [IV] de Tosny (-after 29 Dec 1208). Robert of Torigny records that "parvulo filio" succeeded in 1162 on the death of his father "Radulfus de Toene" but does not name him[75]. Seigneur de Tosny. The Red Book of the Exchequer, listing scutage payments in [1194/95], names "Rogerus de Tony" paying "xl s" in Sussex[76].

b) [RALPH de Tosny of Holkham, co Norfolk (-before 1184). The Red Book of the Exchequer refers to "Radulfus de Tonay ii m" in Sussex in [1167/68][77].] m ADA de Chaumont, daughter of ROBERT de Chaumont & his wife --- (-after 1184). The Rotuli de Dominabus of 1185 records property “in Holkham…de feodo Rogeri de Tony” held by “Ade de Tony…fuit Roberti de Chaumunt”, adding that she has “i filium Baldewinum…xv annorum et…v filias”[78]. A charter dated 25 Sep 1188 confirms the foundation of Dodnash Priory, Suffolk by "Baldewin de Toeni et dna Alda mr sua"[79]. Ralph & his wife had one child:

i) BALDWIN de Tosny ([1169]-after 1210). The Rotuli de Dominabus of 1185 records property “in Holkham…de feodo Rogeri de Tony” held by “Ade de Tony…fuit Roberti de Chaumunt”, adding that she has “i filium Baldewinum…xv annorum et…v filias”[80]. A charter dated 25 Sep 1188 confirms the foundation of Dodnash Priory, Suffolk by "Baldewin de Toeni et dna Alda mr sua"[81]. m --- Bardolf, daughter of THOMAS BARDOLF of Bradwell, Essex & his wife ---. The Red Book of the Exchequer records that "Willelmus frater regis H[enrici]" gave land at "Bradewelle" in Essex to "Thomas Bardulf" who gave three parts thereof with "tres filiabus suis in maritagio…Roberto de Sancto Remigio et Willelmo Bacun et Baldewino de Tony", which "Baldewinus de Thony" still held in [1210/12][82]. Baldwin & his wife had one child:

(a) ROGER .

ii) five daughters . The Rotuli de Dominabus of 1185 records property “in Holkham…de feodo Rogeri de Tony” held by “Ade de Tony…fuit Roberti de Chaumunt”, adding that she has “i filium Baldewinum…xv annorum et…v filias”[83].

2. ROGER de Tosny . The Chronicon Hanoniense names (in order) "Radulphum primum [filium Rogerum], Rogerum secundum et Balduinum tercium et Gaufridum quartum clericum" as the children of "[Rogerum] domino de Thoenio" & his wife[84].

3. BAUDOUIN de Tosny (-1170). The Chronicon Hanoniense names (in order) "Radulphum primum [filium Rogerum], Rogerum secundum et Balduinum tercium et Gaufridum quartum clericum" as the children of "[Rogerum] domino de Thoenio" & his wife84. He had descendants in Hainaut[85].

4. GEOFFROY de Tosny . The Chronicon Hanoniense names (in order) "Radulphum primum [filium Rogerum], Rogerum secundum et Balduinum tercium et Gaufridum quartum clericum" as the children of "[Rogerum] domino de Thoenio" & his wife84. Monk.

Roger De Toeni295 was born 1104 in Flamsted, Hertfordshire, England295, and died 1162 in Flamstead, Herefordshire, England295. He married Ida De Hainault, daughter of Baldwin Hainault and Yolande De Gueldres.

   ROGER DE TOENI III, styled also DE CONCHES, 1st son and heir, was bornprobably about 1104, and succeeded his father about 1126. In 1131 heattested Henry I's pancarte confirming all the grants of his ancestorsand himself and others to the abbey of Conches. He is said to have wagedwar with Hugh de Chateauneuf in 1133. In 1135 the King suspected that hewas preparing to rebel, together with William Talvas, Count of Ponthieu,on behalf of Henry's son-in-law, Geoffrey Plantagenet, and sent his ownsoldiers to garrison the castle of Conches. After the King's death Rogersupported Geoffrey and his wife the Empress Maud against Stephen. AfterEaster 1136 hostilities began between him and the King's generals, thetwins Waleran, Count of Meulan, and Robert, Earl of Leicester; and civilwar raged in May and June. In the autumn the fighting flared up again;but on 3 October Roger was ambushed and captured by Count Waleran andHenry de la Pommeraye. His land was laid under an interdict and he waskept in prison for more than 6 months, butwas released in 1137. In May1138 he was attacked by the Count of Meulan and William d'Ypres, butdefended himself successfully; and on 7 September he captured Breteuiland burnt the town. However, before the end of 1138 he made peace withthe twin Earls, who conducted him to England, where he was reconciled toKing Stephen. Nothing is known of what happened to his English landsduring this period. In 1150 or 1151 he was with Henry, Duke of Normandy,at Rouen. After Henry had become King, Roger enjoyed the royal favour;for between Michaelmas 1157and Michaelmas 1158 the King granted him 100solidates of land at Holkham, Norfolk. He was a benefactor to the abbeysof la Noë, Conches and Bec.

   He married Ida, daughter of BALDWIN III, COUNT OF HAINAULT, by Yolande,daughter of Gerard, COUNT OF GUELDERS. With her he had in marriage fromHenry 120 librates ofland out of the royal demesne at East Bergholt,Suffolk.    Roger de Toeni [the third of that name, or III] was born ca. 1104, anddied afterMichaelmas 1157, presumably before his son died in 1162. Hemarried Ida of Hainault, daughter of Baldwin III, Count of Hainault, byhis wife Yolande de Guelders. It is not known when Ida died, but shepresumably survived him, as Henry II granted her [Ida de Tounay] land atGarsington, co. Oxford [Rot. Hund.].

   This couple had four known sons:

   (1) Ralph de Toeni [V], who succeeded his father and died 1262/3, havingmarried Margaret de Beaumont.

   (2) Roger de Toeni, Jr., dead by 1185, when his wife Ade/Alda de Chaumontwas holding land at Holkington, co. Norfolk, of her son Baldwin de Toeni[II] (1170-1216), Seigneur deAcquigny, apparently father of Roger deAkeny and Sir William Dakeny [Acquigny]. The Rotuli de Dominabus statesthat Ade/Alda was born about 1155, and that she had five daughters asidefrom her son Baldwin. [Does anyone have any Dakeny ancestry?]

   (3) Baldwin de Toeni, who settled in Hainault [having resided withhisuncle Baldwin IV], where he died in 1170, leaving issue.

   (4) Geoffrey deToeni, a cleric who flourished 1157-62, 1177.

   Two daughters have also been mentioned before:

   1) Goda (c1136-) m Walchieline de Ferrers

   2)Godeheutde Toeni (-<1186) m William de Mohun (<1143-1176); Of Dunster;s

   of William by Agnesde Gaunt. They left Agnes and Yolante

Roger was also called Roger III de Conches.

Seigneur de Conches Roger III de Tosny succeeded his father at Flamstead circa 1126.

He attested King Henry I's pancarte, confirming all the grants of his ancestors and himself and others to the abbey of Conches in 1131.

Roger married Gertrud de Hainaut, daughter of Baudouin III, comte de Hainaut, and Jolanda van Wassenberg, before 1135.

Roger died between 1157 and 1162.

After the King's death, Roger supported Geoffrey and his wife, the Empress Maud, against Stephen. Hostilities began between Roger and the King's generals, the twins Waleran, Count of Meulan, and Robert (de Beaumont), Earl of Leicester, after Easter 1136, and civil war raged in May and Jun. But hostilities flared again in the autumn, and on 3 Oct Roger was ambushed and captured, and his land was laid under interdict and he was kept in prison for more than 6 months, finally being released in 1137. In May the following year, he was again attacked by the Count of Meulan, but successfully defended himself and on 7 Sep he captured Breteuil and burned that town. But before the end of that year, he made peace with the twin Earls and was reconciled with King Stephen. In 1150 or 1151 he was with Henry, Duke of Normandy, at Rouen, and after Henry became King, Roger enjoyed his royal favor. He was benefactor to the abbeys of Noe, Conches, and Bec.
