Samuel Holloway, Sr.

Samuel Holloway Sr. (c. 1737–1817) was the youngest child of John and Hannah. His wife was Rebecca Hubbard (born about 1745 in Virginia), daughter of Joseph Hubbard (1717–1799) and his first (unknown) wife. (Joseph's second wife was Frances Cobb.) Samuel and Rebecca moved from Cumberland Co., VA to Greene Co., GA by 1792, where they lived on Beaverdam fork of Richland Creek, just north of Greensboro and the Oconee River. They remained there through about 1807, and then in 1808 their son Isham purchased 202.5 acres in Baldwin County near Randolph County, the area soon formed into Jasper County. Samuel and Rebecca and a few of their adult children then moved to Jasper County. Samuel made his will there on 19 Jun. 1817 and died before the will was proved in court on 7 Jul. 1817. Samuel and Rebecca were the parents of: Hannah Spiers Holloway, born 18 Mar. 1765, married Jacob White (1763–1832), died 1816 in Bedford Co., VA; Isham (aka Isaac), born 14 Jun. 1766, married Judith (Hubbard?), died before 14 Apr. 1814 in Jasper Co., GA; Samuel Jr., born 12 Dec. 1767, married Clary MNU, died by 1825 in Putnam Co., GA; John, born 8 Mar. 1769, married Mary "Molly" Hubbard (daughter of Moses Hubbard and Anne Holland Bond (daughter of William Holland Sr. and widow of Page Bond)), died in Oglethorpe Co., GA by 1821; Jesse, born 1 Mar. 1771, married Mary Smith on 9 Aug. 1800 in Oglethorpe Co., GA, died before 6 Feb. 1823 in Jasper Co., GA; Judith, born 10 Dec. 1772, marriage and death unknown; Sarah, born 27 Feb. 1774, marriage and death unknown (often confused with the Sarah Holloway who married William Riggins in Surry County on 30 Jan. 1796, both these Sarah Holloways confused with the Sarah MNU who married Powell Riggins who died 1845 in SC); Rebecca, born 22 Feb. 1776, married John Hamilton on 3 Jun. 1795 in Oglethorpe Co., GA, died 16 Nov. 1846 in Newton Co., GA; Nancy, born 29 Sep. 1777, married John Hughes on 22 Jan. 1800 in Greene Co., GA, died after Jun. 1817; Elizabeth, born 25 Jun. 1779, married James Heard (son of John Heard and Mary Meador) in about 1799 in Georgia, died 14 Nov. 1855 in Greene Co., GA; Joseph, born 24 Mar. 1781, married Obedience "Biddy" East, died 22 Sep. 1878 in Monroe Co., AL; William, born 20 Jan.1787, married first to Sabara Baughan on 28 Nov. 1811 in Oglethorpe Co., GA, married second to Matilda Bailey on 4 Jul. 1815 in Jasper Co., GA, died 26 Jan. 1826 in Jasper Co., GA, Matilda was allowed a widow's pension for William's military service in the War of 1812 ; and Mary "Polly," born 26 Aug. 1791, marriage and death unknown. (Dates of birth and death for this family were preserved in the family Bible of Matilda Bailey Holloway, the second wife of William Holloway, son of Samuel and Rebecca; see Austin, Alabama Bible Records, 86–87; Genealogical Society of East Alabama, "William Holloway Bible, 1765 – 1864." Tap Roots 31 (Winter 1994) 152–54, with notes by Edith Holloway Stevens). This family Bible does not give dates of birth for Samuel or Rebecca. The Rebecca Hubbard born 17 Feb. 1744 was born in Worcester Co., MA and was not the Rebecca Hubbard who married Samuel Holloway. Rebecca Hubbard Holloway was born in Virginia.
