About Simon Lobdell, of Milford
Biography
Taken from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lobdell-12 and then edited
This is the profile for Simon Lobdell who lived in Hartford, Springfield and Milford in 1655-1711.
Parentage; Date and Place of Birth
As asserted in a 1978 TAG article by Douglas Richardson,[1] Simon was very probably the Symon Lobdell, son of Nicholas Lobdell, who was baptized in Northam, Devonshire on 23 December 1632.[2] The factors supporting that assertion include:
- The fact that Simon lived in Springfield, Massachusetts at the same time as Elizabeth (Lobdell) Burt and Ann (Lobdell) Terry, whom most genealogists presume were his sisters, and the Northam, Devonshire register also includes entries for the baptism in 1631 of Elizabeth Lobdell, daughter of Nicholas Lobdell,[3] and the baptism in March 1634/5 of an Ane Lobdell, daughter of Nicholas Lobdell.[4][5]
- The paternal name, Nicholas, in the Northam baptismal records is consistent with speculation that Simon, Elizabeth and Ann Lobdell of Springfield were the children of Nicholas Lobdell who lived in Hingham, Massachuetts in 1635-1638.
- No other record of the baptism in 1620-1640 of either a Simon Lobdell or an Ann Lobdell (or spelling variants thereof) has been found.
- No evidence has been found that Nicholas, Simon, Elizabeth or Ann Lobdell of Northam remained in England after 1635.
Douglas Richardson had stated that the baptismal record that he presumed was for Ann Lobdell was for an unnamed daughter.[1] In fact, the Northam parish register entry is just so badly faded that the name is essentially unreadable.[4] The finding that the bishop's transcript of that baptismal record clearly shows the daughter's name as "Ane"[5] significantly strengthens the connection with the Springfield trio.
Mother's Given Name
The given name of Simon's mother is uncertain and her maiden name is unknown. In his 1978 TAG article, Richardson stated that the baptismal record for Nicholas Lobdell's daughter born in March 1634/5 listed her mother's name as "Jane".[1] However, a re-examination of that baptismal record in the Northam parish register suggests that the name could have been either "Jane" or "Jone".[4] Casting more doubt on her name, the bishop's transcript of the baptismal record shows the mother's name as "Ane".[5] The evidence therefore indicates that the name of Ann's mother may have been Jane, Jone or Ane/Ann.
Emigration to New England; Residency at Hingham
Assuming that Nicholas Lobdell of Hingham, Massachusetts was Simon's father, Simon, his parents and his siblings Elizabeth and Ann probably emigrated from Devonshire to New England in 1635 or 1636 when Simon was about 3-4 years old and settled in Hingham, Massachusetts.[6] Simon's mother died there in 1641,[7] when Simon was about 9. Since the last record of his father was from 1648, Simon and his siblings may have become orphans shortly after that date, when Simon was about 16.[6]
First Marriage
Milford church records establish that Simon was married to a woman whose given name was Persis. As discussed in her profile, her maiden name has not been determined. Julia Harrison Lobdell stated that she assumed without proof that he had married Persis Pierce, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Pierce of Charlestown.[10] However, as discussed in the profile for Persis Pierce, the record evidence indicates that she was not the Persis who was Simon's wife.
Assuming that Persis was the mother of Simon's first child (who was most likely born about 1667), Simon and Persis were probably married about 1666. Since Simon was most likely still living in Hartford at that time, it is most likely that they were married there.
Children
Simon and Persis had the following children:
- Mary, b. say 1667 in Hartford or Springfield, m. say 1701 David Wooster probably in Milford, d. before 1 April 1723 in Derby, Connecticut. (See discussion and sources in Mary's profile.)
- Elizabeth, b. 7 October 1669 in Springfield,[37] m. say 1690 William Roberts
- Joshua, b. 23 December 1671 in Springfield,[37] m. 1st 11 August 1695 Mary Burwell at Milford,[38] m. 2d Eunice Benedict,[38] d. before 31 October 1743[38]
- Anna, b. 1 December 1674 in Springfield,[24] probably died young, although possibly the same person as the Ann who was baptized in Milford in 1685.
- Rebecca, b. about 1676 probably in Hartford, m. say 1698 Deliverance Downs probably at Milford, d. either 2 February 1740 or 9 February 1740 in Milford. (See discussion and sources in Rebecca's profile.)
- Samuel, bpt. 7 September 1679 at Milford,[39][29] probably died young
- Caleb, bpt. 26 November 1682 at Milford,[40][29] probably died young
- Ann/Anne, bpt. 29 November 1685 in Milford,[41][29] m. say 1707 Joseph Benedict probably in Milford, d. 9 December 1716 in Ridgefield. (See discussion and sources in Ann's profile.)
Second Marriage
Simon probably married, second, shortly before 4 March 1698/9, Sarah (Bassett) Hitt, the widow of Henry Hitt of Stratford and Woodbury, Connecticut.[42][43] That assertion is based largely on a deed dated that date by Samuel Sherman of Stratford, administrator of the estate of Henry Hitt of Woodbury, which was consented to by administratrix Sarah Lobdell.[42] The assertion that Simon had a second marriage is also supported by Simon's estate records which show that Simon entered into a pre-nuptial agreement (a "joynture") under which the woman who became his widow had agreement to accept £20 from his estate in lieu of any portion that she would have been entitled by to law.[44]
Death; Estate
Simon died sometime before 4 October 1717, when Joshua Lobdell of Ridgefield was granted administration of the estate of Simon Lobdell of Milford, lately deceased.[45] Julia Harrison Lobdell descibed Simon's 1702 deed to his son, Joshua, as Simon's "will",[10] but it was just a deed. Simon did not make a will and is referred to as intestate in his estate records.[45]
On 6 October 1717, the inventory of the estate of Simon Lobdell late of Milford deceased, taken by Silvanus Baldwin and John Shepheard, was sworn to by Joshua Lobdell, administrator. The inventory totalled £41.19.0 and included a cow, 3 swine, clothing, a bible and 6 other books, spectacles and various household items. To that inventory, the probate court added a debt of £3 owed by John Shepheard.[45]
Joshua Lobdell, the adminstrator of the estate, exhibited to the probate court a joynture made between Simon and his widow and her receipt in full satisfaction thereof of £20 "at inventory price."[44]
The legatees of the estate were Joshua Lobdell of Ridgefield, Deliverance Downs of Milford in right of his wife, Joseph Benedict of Ridgefield in right of his wife, David Wooster of Derby in right of his wife, and William Roberts of Durham in right of his wife.[44]

"From public records at Milford it appears that Simon Lobdell, in 1646, had given him by the 'first planters' of the town, for a house lot, a triangular shaped half-acre of ground. In 1655 we find his name given as a resident of Milford. He took the freeman's oath at Hartford, Conn. May 21, 1657 ... He went to Springfield, Mass., ... there he was prison-keeper from 1666 to 1674... and accumulated considerable property. In 1681 Simon purchased 60 acres (but was not a settler) at Stony River, between Springfield and Windsor, and had interests in Hull, Mass., in 1682. No proof of his marriage nor birth of Mary, his first child, has been found, but I assume without proof that he married Persis Pierce. Simon returned to Milford, Conn., where his wife Persis was admitted to the First Church of Milford, 7 January, 1677... At Milford, his children married and there Simon died, previous to 4 Oct., 1717...
. as on that date, at Probate Court held at New Haven, Conn., his son Joshua Lobdell of Ridgefield. Conn., moved for administration on the estate of Simon Lobdell of Milford, lately deceased, which was .granted on his bond. The same administrator exhibited a jointure made between the deceased and the widow, of full satisfaction.
Names given: Joshua Lobdell, son of Simon; Wm. Roberts; Deliverance Downs ; David Wooster. (All in right of their wives.) Anna Lobdell ; Joseph Benedict of Ridgefield ; a debt of John Sheppard and a bill for funeral expenses.
In the will of Simon Lobdell, he calls himself Lieut., but as the records kept are very imperfect. I fail to find the proof.
