Biographical Summary

"Sir Archibald Primrose of Carringham, younger son of James Primrose, Clerk of the Privy Council [S], 1602 till his death in 1641, being his 1st son by his 2nd wife, Catherine, daughter of Richard Lawson, Bookseller, Burgess of Edinburgh, was born 16 May 1616...

...He married firstly, in or before 1641, Elizabeth, 1st daughter and coheir of the Hon. Sir James Keith, of Benholme (2nd son of George, 5th Earl of Marischal [S], by Margaret, daughter of Sir David Lindsay of Edzall. He married secondly, Agnes, widow of Sir James Dundas, of Newliston, co. Linlithgow, daughter of Sir William Gray of Pittendrum. He died 27 November 1679, in his 64th year, and was buried at Dalmony."

KINSHIP: Younger son being 1st son by 2nd wife.

MILITARY: It is stated by Douglas that after the battle of Kilsyth he joined the Marquess of Montrose and taken prisoner at Philiphaugh 1645. After his release he repaired to the Scottish army at newcastle and was there knighted by the King 1646.
MILITARY: Battles and Wars> After the battle of Worcester he retired until the Restoration. OFFICE: Acted as deputy to his father in his office of Clerk to the Privy Council during his last illness 1641. Appointed to that post but only held it for a few months 1641. Performing duties as Clerk to the Council 1645, 1647. OFFICE: Appointed Lord Clerk Register 1660. OFFICE: Appointed one of the ordinary Lords of Session under the title of Lord Carrington 1661. OFFICE: Appointed Justice-General 1676. ASSIGNMENTS: Accompanied Charles II in his expedition into England 1651.

HONORS: Knighted 1646. TITLES: Created Baronet 1651.

POLITICS: A fervid Royalist, and was one of the Engagers for the rescue of the King 1648. although a supporter of Middleton, he was independent enough to oppose the Balloting Act. After Middleton's fall he ultimately found the hostile influence of Lauderdale too much for him and he was forced to resign both his offices 1676. He visited London in a vain attempt to adjust the differences between the country party and the Court. This was his last public appearance 1679.

RESIDENCE: Of Carrington.

PROPERTY: Made extensive purchases of land. Acquired the barony of Barnbougle and Dalmeny which still remains the principal seat of the family 1662. PROPERTY: Settled his estate of Dunipace, Stirlingshire, Scotland on his 1st daughter, Margaret's issue.

FINANCES: Amassed a considerable fortune.

PUNISHMENT: Imprisoned> Taken prisoner and tried by the Parliament at St. Andrews and found guilty of treason, but that his life was spared on the intercession of the Marquess of Argyll 1646. PUNISHMENT: Deprived of his office of Clerk to the Council 1649. His estates were sequestrated after the battle of Worcester.

INVESTIGATE: The statement by Douglas that after the battle of Kilsyth Archibald joined the Marquess of Montrose and was taken prisoner at Philiphaugh in 1645. He was tried by Parliament at St. Andrews and found guilty of treason, but his life was spared on the intercession of the Marquess of Argyll 1646. But it is doubtful if this is correct which is stated in the text.
