About Sir John de Maltravers, of Woolcombe
Maltravers is an alternate spelling of Mautravers.
Sir John Maltravers, Knight, was summoned for military service abroad in May 1297. He was also summoned to the muster at Carlyle, for service against the Scots, on 24 June 1300. Again, he was summoned for military service, as one of the fideles of Ireland, in 1301 in Ireland. He was summoned again for military service in 1302 again in Ireland.
Sir John was a witness where Maurice III "the magnanimous," 2nd Lord Berkeley attended Prince Edward into Scotland in 1306.
Sir John obtained a charter for free warren in all his demesne lands at Lychet-Maltravers in 1306 at Dorset, England.
At the Feast of the Swan on 22 May 1306, King Edward I knighted his son (who would later be King Edward II) at Westminster Abbey. The young prince himself then knighted the other 260 men who were accorded the accolade at the same time--including Sir John. And "all given splendid robes (of purple satin, fine linen and robes sewn with the finest gold) and Westminster Abbey rang with the clamour of trumpets and shouts of joy." At the feast following, the king had two swans brought in, swearing ‘before God and the swans’ to ‘avenge the death John Comyn of Badenock and to fight the infidels in the Holy Land.
Sir John attended Prince Edward into Scotland, being in the retinue with Maurice de Berkeley after 22 May 1306.
Sir John was conservator of the peace between 1307 and 1329 in Dorsetshire.
Sir John had further summons between 1314 and 1333 in Ireland. He was again in the wars in Scotland in 1313/14. He had military summons to attend the king with horse and arms at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, to restrain the incursions of the Scots in 1314/15. He served against Edward Bruce in 1316/17 in Ireland.
Sir John was summoned to attend the Great Council at Westminster in May 1324. Finally, he was summoned for military service in Guienne in 1324/25 in France.
