Richard de Montfitchet, 2nd son of William, was Sheriff of Essex and Herts, and was dead 5th of King John. Henry II confirmed him in the office of Forester of Essex, in as ample manner as it had been enjoyed by his ancestors. In 6th of Richard I he was with the King in Normandy, and in the 2nd year of King John paid 100 marks for confirmation of Forestship of Essex and Huntingdon, and son continued until his death in 5th year of John, 1204. He was keeper of the King's houses in Havering and elsewhere in the forests or royal preserves in Essex. He had one son, Richard, who died sine prole in 1258. Richard was under age at his father's death, and his wardship was committed to Roger de Lacy, who purchased it for 1000 marks. He did not become of age until the spring of 1215, and his first public act was to join the baronial party in arms against the King, and for some reason not evident he was chosen one of the Twenty-five Sureties for the Magna Carta. He never married and died without issue after 1258, and his lands were divided between his three sisters. (Kin of Mellcene Thurman Smith, page 807)
