Sir William Grierson, 9th Lord of Lag. Born: 1550/1567-1575 in Rock, Capenoch, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Died: 21 Jan 1629 at Lag, Dumfriesshire, Lord of Lag, Scotland. He was shot and killed. From this time on the family called themselves Grier or Greer instead of Grierson. He was invested as a Knight by James VI in 1608. He fought in the Battle of Dryfe Sands in 1593, escaped only by the fleetness of his horse. Sir William was Commissioner to Parliament for Dumfriesshire 1617, 1621 and 1625, Sheriff of Dumfies 1615, 1617, and 1621 plus one of the Commissioners for the Borders in 1623. He built or rebuilt the house of Rockhall, giving it in liferent to his wife Nicolas, daughter of John Maxwell and his wife Agnes, whom he married in 1593.
