17 December 1517: Instrument narrating that Robert Francis of Stane, uncompelled and freely constituted, and named John Wallace in ... , his nephew (or grandson) (nepotem), and son of Adam Wallace in Barleith, as his cessioner and assignee in and to all his goods, moveable and immoveable, belonging to Robert at his decease, reserving to the latter, the granter, a reasonable . . . and to the sisters of said John, and the necessaries about funerals at his burial ; transfen-ing all right of said goods to John Wallace after the granter's decease, reserving to the granter the free use and disposition of the goods during his life. January 1517-18: Instrument narrating that William Bostoun, uncompelled and of his free will, his own profit being considered, transferred and gave all the right and interest he had in the 16s. lands of Auchinbrayne, with tack thereof made to him, his assignee's wife and children by the abbot and convent of Melros for 19 years, to John Campble of Litill Sesnok. Moreover, William faithfully promised to make and cause his wife and children to resign their right and interest in the said lands and tack to John C., with goodwill. William also promised homage and service to said John, to be to him a true and faithful man and servant before (" ante ") all mortals, his service to the King and William Wallace of Cragy only excepted ; to fulfil which, William gave his bodily oath. John C. faithfully promised the said William (by extension ?) of his hand, to cause him peacefully to possess the merk-land of Auchinmubyne for three years, and also promised to defend him in possession of said land to all his possible power, and to defend, aid and maintain William in his lawful, just and honest causes and pleas, and to cause his grain to be restored to him ; and to receive pledges of right from certain persons whom the said William fears because of bodily injury. 4 December 1521: Instrument narrating that Fergus M'Cubyne in Ba(llochage) freely resigned the following annual rents :— 40s. yearly from the tenement of Alexander Ratht, lying in the burgh of Are, between the tenement of the late Alexander Johnsone on the south and that of the late William Wallace of Cragy on the north ; 40s. yearly from the tenement of John Broun of said burgh, between the tenement of the late John Chapman on the south and that of William Walker on the north ; ,£3 yearly from the forehouse, under and above, of Leonard Clerk, with chamber from back part adjoining, in the said burgh between the tenement of Adam \Wallace of Newtoun on the west and that of John Mure on the east ; and 20s. yearly from the tenement of James Kennedy, lying between the tenement of John Mure on west and that of Mathew Rodman on the east ; in the hands of John Kennedy, one of the bailies of the burgh, in favour of John M'Cubyn, his son, reserving his liferent use of the said annual rents with a reasonable terce to his wife, which resignation being made and received, the bailie gave sasine in due form to John M'Cubyn. 2 May 1529: On the same day Finlay Campble of Corswell asserted that he brought Finlay C, son and heir-apparent of William C. of Lowdoun Hill, to the burgh of Air, with the intention of delivering him to Hugh Campble of Lowdoun, sheriff of Air, and because the latter was not present to receive the minor, (the curator) wished (to go to) Cragy and deliver Finlay to William Wallace of Cragy and Besseta Cample, his spouse, for the profit of the said sheriff, so far as he is bound in law ; moreover, the said Finlay C. of Corswell offered himself ready to deliver the minor to Quintin Schaw, king's messenger, in terms of royal letters, but Quintin refused to receive him. 3 December 1531: Instrument narrating that John Wallace of Meynfurd obliged himself, his heirs and assignees, faithfully to pay and deliver to David Semple, his heirs, executors and assignees, the sum of 90 merks as surety for Elizabeth Campble, relict of the late William Wallace of Cragi . . . , William Wallace, his son and heir, at certain terms in complete payment! of the lands of Camcescan, cf next writ, this being defective). 3 December 1531: The same day David Semple, husband, as he asserted, of Elizabeth (Schau ,cf No. 1167), lawfully required, as he declared, according to letters of reversion of the fifteen-merk. lands of Camcescan of new extent, lawfully redeemed and released by Elizabeth Campble, relict of the late William Wallace of Cragi, and William Wallace, his son and heir, and freely resigned the said lands in the hands of said William Wallace, son and heir of the said late William Wallace of Cragy, as in the hands of the overlord of the same, with all right and claim in the lands lawfully redeemed and the letters of reversion fulfilled in all things, renouncing also the charter, sasine and all other evidents of the lands made to him. 3 December 1531: Instrument narrating that Elizabeth Schaw, relict of the late Thomas Cunighame in Washfurd, compearing in the church of the friars preachers of Air, asserted and alleged that she was infeft by charter and sasine in certain lands of Camcescan, extending to ... . Therefore she solemnly protested that whatever was done between David Semple on the one part and (Elizabeth Campble), relict of the late William Wallace of Cragy, and William Wallace, his son and heir, on the other part, concerning the pretended (redemption?) of the lands of Camcescan, should not prejudice her. [Here several lines are faint or defective, rendering the sense unintelligible.) She had caused the said David to be infeft in said lands in terms of a contract betwixt them. Therefore, for these and other reasons, she solemnly protested that whatever was done between the said parties as to the redemption of the lands should not prejudice her. Moreover, Elizabeth offered herself ready to receive the sum of 160 merits, according to the letters of reversion. She asserted also that the church of Symontoun was the place assigned in the letters of reversion for receipt of the money. Done in the said church 3 December 1 531.
