• Jordan de Champernowne 'de Campo Arnulfi' Various web sites name him Jordan de Campo Arnulfi or Ernulfi, with at least one identifying him as Sn de Maisoncelles. Some web sites show him as married to Mabel (dau of Robert de Caen, Earl of Gloucester, widow of Aubrey de Vere) with his son Jordan being the husband of Mabel, dau of Philip de Suligny (possibly by Hawise de Redvers). Provisionally, we follow Vivian in showing that it was this Jordan who married ... m. Mabel de Soligny (dau of Philip de Soligny)
  • 1. Richard de Champernowne Various web sites omit this generation, showing Jordan as father rather than grandfather of Henry, some showing Richard as Henry's elder brother. Vivian shows a clear connection from Jordan to Richard but the connection from Richard to the following Henry is with a dotted line, indicating some uncertainty on the connection.

2. Sir HENRY de CAMPO ARNULPHI (CHAMBERNUN). Still a minor in 1242/3 when the lands of his late father were noted as being held by his heirs (Book of Fees, 2: 778, 784). Henry de Chambernun and Dionisia, his wife, were named in a land warranty of 6 June 1249 (Devon Feet of Fines 1196-1272: no. 497). On 9 Dec 1262, he was holder of the "Court of Henry and his heirs at Alfricumb" (Ilfracombe) where Henry himself was a plaintiff (Devon Feet of Fines, no. 472). On 24 Nov 1265, a mandate was issued to Henry de Chaumbren to deliver the castle to Ralph de Gorges (Cal. Patent Rolls, 1258-66, p. 508). On 16 Feb 1270, in a fine between Henry de Chaumbernun, claimant and Hugh de Treverbyn, deforciant, regarding the manors of Trevolonan, Tywardrayth, Ludevon (Ludgvan) and Penalym (Penhallyn in Jacobstow), Hugh acknowledged the manors that Henry held by gift of Isolda de Cardinham (Cornwall Feet of Fines 1195-1377, no. 222). As Lord of Ilfracombe, he presented there to the church in June 1263, June 1272, and Dec 1276; as Lord of Jacobstowe, Cornwall he presented there to the church in June 1270, then being called a knight, and in Sept 1272. As Lord of Coryton (Curitone) he presented there to the church in Sept 1279 (Bronescombe, pp. 127, 145, 146). On 22 April 1279 he was given a grant of a weekly market and a yearly fair at his manor of Ilfracombe (Cal. Charter Rolls, 2: 211). On 5 July 1277 he had protection going to Wales on the King's service (Cal. Patent Rolls, 1272-81, p. 217) and was last recorded as justice of the gaol delivery at Oxford and Exeter in May and July 1281 (Cal. Patent Rolls, 1272-81, p. 441, 445). Vivian (p. 160) states he married Dionisia, daughter of Gilbert and sister and coheiress of Sir Robert English or Engloiz, of Stokeley. He was certainly married to a Dionisia by June 1249 who survived her husband as Dame Dionisia de Campo Arnulphi when, in March 1284, she presented Oliver de Campo Arnulphi, subdeacon, presumably their son, as rector of Jacobstowe (Bronescombe, p. 347) Stockeley-Engles (Stockleigh-English) was in possession of her grandson, Henry, who presented to the church in April 1312. • Background Information. 160 Sir Henry de Chambernon, son of Oliver de Chambernon and Wymarca, was born abt 1225 (still a minor in 1242/3), living in 1281 of Ilfracombe, Jacobstowe, Coryton and Alphington, Devon, and Tywardreath and Ludgvan, Coirnwall; married Dionisia English, daughter of Sir Robert English of Stockleigh English, Devon.

• Family History. 1243 From Magna Britannia: volume 6: Devonshire, pp.139-140: "Champernowne, of Dartington. \emdash The name of this ancient family was originally De Campo Arnulphi, and it appears from Leland, that in the reign of Henry VIII., they were called Campernulph. The name in records of the best authority, is sometimes spelt Champernon, and sometimes Champernowne. We first find them as early as the reign of Henry II., at Clist St. George, called occasionally in records Clist Champernon. The heiress of the elder branch, which was of Clist and of Ilfracombe, after about six descents, married Polglass. Sir Richard, a younger son of Sir Henry Champernowne, of Clist, married the heiress of Sir Alexander de Okeston, by his wife Joan, relict of Richard de Valletort; which Joan, is supposed to have been a concubine of Richard, King of the Romans. His son Edmund, Earl of Cornwall, calls the daughter of De Okeston, in a deed, sister. Sir Richard Champernowne, the son, had a grant of Modbury, where he settled: Sir Richard, son of the last mentioned Sir Richard, married a co-heiress of Valletort, of North Tawton; his son, Sir Thomas, the heiress of Rohant. Sir Richard, son of Sir Thomas, had by his first wife, Alexander Champernowne, who married the heiress of Ferrers, and settled at Beer Ferrers.

Henry married Dionisia English. (Dionisia English was born in Stockleigh English, Devonshire, England and died After Mar 1283/4 in Devonshire, England 193.)
