Thomas Smith was a Virginia colonist.

Thomas Ballard Smith, son of William Smith and Elizabeth (Ballard) Smith, was born in between 1705 / 1713 in Gloucester County, Virginia, and died 12 January 1778 in Trinity Parish, Louisa County.

Thomas married Anne Meriwether, "born Nov., 1721, daughter of David Meriwether and Anne Holmes, daughter of George Holmes, of King and Queen county."[1]

Thomas mentions David Meriwether in his will - "a tract given by David Meriwether to all my children in common" - as well as a sister, Susanna Fox, and his niece Caty Fox.[1]

In addition to his wife Ann, Thomas names the following children and grandchildren in his will, dated 13 August 1776.[1]

  1. son William Smith[1]
  2. daughter Ann Smith[1]
  3. daughter Katy Smith[1]
  4. daughter Susanna Smith[1]
  5. daughter Sally Smith[1]
  6. daughter Rosanna Smith[1]
  7. grandson Thomas Ballard Wyatt[1]
  8. grandson Francis Wyatt[1]
  9. grandson John Wyatt[1]

Executors: William Duval, James Meriwether, William Meriwether, and George Meriwether, Gent.[1]

Thomas had conveyed land to his Wyatt grandsons - sons of John Wyatt of the "Parish of St. George and County of Caroline" - in 1764. In 1778, two of those grandsons were recorded in a land record as "John Wyatt and Anne, his wife, and Thomas Ballard Wyatt and Susanna, his wife, of Hanover County".[2]

Thomas's will was recorded in Louisa County on 12 January 1778. In 1791, a record of his estate settlement includes the names of his daughters' husbands (see abstract in next section):[3]

  1. Caty Smith married Richard Paulett[3]
  2. Susanna Smith married Elijah Dickerson[3]
  3. Sarah Smith married Robert Kimbrough[3]
  4. Roxanna Smith married Edward Dudley[3]

Research Notes

Francis Smith: I'm intrigued by the "Received Francis Smith's Exors." in the abstract of the 1791 estate settlement.[3] Trying to see if Thomas's son William had a DAR record, I found too many possibilities, but one was a son of Francis. ~ Noland-165, 12 February 2022

One of the DAR records, for a William Smith born 14 December 1755 in Hanover County, died 1833 in Louisa County, cited a pension application. In that application, William testifies that his birth was recorded by his father Frances [sic] Smith.[4]

The DAR record for this William Smith, son of Francis, has his wives as (1) Catherine Bibb, (2) Ann Bibb, and includes children Ballard Smith (married Mary Lewis Price) and Francis Smith (married Patience W. Blankenship).[4]

WikiTree has a profile for him: William Smith (abt.1755-1833). His father Francis is attached as son of Elizabeth (Ballard) Smith (1687-1745), but not her husband, William Smith, son of Lawrence. (At least, not as of this writing, 12 February 2022.)

The will of Thomas Ballard Smith was written on 30 August 1776, with a codicil written on 6 October 1777. It was proved in Louisa, Virginia on 12 January 1778. Family members named are his wife Ann, his son William Smith, his daughters (all under age) Anne, Caty, Susanna, Sally and Roseana Smith, his sister Susanna Fox, his niece Caty Fox, and his grandsons Thomas Ballard Wyatt, Francis Wyatt and John Wyatt.[5]

Louisa, Virginia deed book J, page 161 On 8 June 1801, "Elijah Dickinson and Susanna Dickinson formerly Susanna Smith, Robert Kimbrough and Sally Kimbrough formerly Sally Smith, and Ann Smith, being legatees and named in the last will and testament of Thomas B. Smith, deceased" release to William B. Smith "all the estate right and title which we ever had, now have or may have" to 200 acres of land "by virtue of the will aforesaid". This release is made in compliance with the will of Thomas B. Smith, deceased, which says "It is my will and desire that my land I am now possessed of...should be sold and out of the money arising from such sale I give and bequeath unto my said son, William Smith...two fifths of the whole amount of [6]
