William Hamilton, was born in County Tyrone Ireland, immigrated to America several years prior to the Revolution, and settled at the place now called Ginger Hill, in Washington County, Pennsylvania, then a frontier settlement. He married Mary Jane (Mollie) Bitener, also of Ireland. They had 8 children.

His educational advantages were very limited, only having an opportunity to attend school about three months. He afterward learned to write his name on the head of a whiskey barrel while distilling. His first business was clearing the forest and watching the Indians.

William Hamilton served in the Pennsylvania militia and his name is found among those who received depreciation pay in 1781. His sons, Daniel, David, and John, also served in the Pennsylvania militia.

William Hamilton left three sons Daniel, David, and John; and five daughters: Mrs. Wylie, Mrs. McDonough, Mrs. Scott, Mrs. Bolton, and Mrs. Barr. David lived on the land from 1787 to his death. The sisters of David Hamilton lived with him until they married. Mrs. Barr was the last to marry.

William Hamilton was born in 1700 in Strabane, County Tyrone, Ireland, the fifth of seven known children and the fourth of six sons of Alexander and Jane Cavan Hamilton.

In 1718, when he was in his later teens, he married Mary Jane Bitener. She bore him fifteen children, eleven sons and four daughters:

  1. Claude Hamilton (1719–?)
  2. Jane Hamilton, 1721-1789

  13. Captain John Hamilton (1766–1863)
  14. Ann Scott (1767–1848)
