William Henry Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, 6th Duke of Buccleuch & 8th Duke of Queensberry KG KT PC JP DL (9 September 1831 – 5 November 1914) was a Scottish Member of Parliament and peer. He was the paternal grandfather of HRH Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, and the maternal great-grandfather of HRH Prince William of Gloucester and HRH Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester. He was a paternal 2nd great-grandfather to Sarah, Duchess of York.

Early Life, Marriage, & Family

Born at Montagu House, Whitehall, Westminster, into a family of four boys and three girls, William Henry Walter Montagu Douglas Scott was the eldest son of Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch & 7th Duke of Queensberry and Lady Charlotte Anne Thynne, daughter of Sir Thomas Thynne, 2nd Marquess of Bath, and the Hon. Isabella Elizabeth Byng.[1] He was educated at Eton College and at Christ Church, Oxford.[1]

On Tuesday, November 22, 1859 at London, England, he married Lady Louisa Jane Hamilton, the third daughter of Sir James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn and Lady Louisa Jane Russell, daughter of Sir John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford.[2]. As heir apparent to his father's title, William's new bride was immediately styled "Countess of Dalkeith". They had six sons and two daughters:

He sat as Conservative Member of Parliament for Midlothian from 1853–1868 and from 1874–1880. He was also Lieutenant Colonel of the Midlothian Yeomanry from 1856–1872, as well as serving as Justice of the Peace (JP) for Selkirkshire, Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of Selkirkshire, and Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of Roxburghshire.[2]

William Henry Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, 6th Duke of Buccleuch & 8th Duke of Queensberry, died at Montagu House, Whitehall, London, England on Thursday, November 5, 1914, in his 84th year. He had survived his wife, Lady Louisa Jane, by little more than two years. He was survived by six of his seven children and their families.

He was buried on Tuesday, November 10, 1914 in the Buccleuch family crypt in St. Mary's Church, Dalkeith Palace, Midlothian, Scotland.[4]

He was buried on Tuesday 10 November 1914 in the family crypt of the Buccleuch Memorial Chapel in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Dalkeith, Midlothian. The church is located on Dalkeith's High Street, at the entrance to Dalkeith Country Park.

He was styled as Earl of Dalkeith between 1831 and 1884. He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, on 23 May 1850. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Midlothian between 1853 and 1868. He was attached to a special mission to Russia in 1856. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Dumfries-shire between 1858 and 1914. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Midlothian between 1874 and 1880. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) on 5 August 1875. He succeeded to the title of 10th Lord Scott of Buccleuch [S., 1606] on 16 April 1884. He succeeded to the title of 6th Earl of Dalkeith [S., 1663] on 16 April 1884.
