William Odell, Jr.

William Odell came from England to Concord in 1639; probably a member of Peter Bulkeley's congregation. Bulkeley was born in the parish of Odell, Bedford, England. In 1644, William Odell moved to Fairfield, Connecticut, and his son William became one of the principal proprietors of Rye, New York. (NEHGR, 29:203; 137:37).

3. WILLIAM WOODHULL3 ODELL (WILLIAM2, RICHARD1) was born November 14, 1634 in Parish of Odell, Bedfordshire, England, and died 1700 in Fairfield, CT. He married SARA VOWLES 1664 in Rye, NY. She was born 1649 in Rye, Westchester Co., NY, and died 1697 in Fairfield, CT.

Notes for WILLIAM WOODHULL ODELL:

In 1681 William owned 400 acres of land in Fairfield and was one of the Proprietors of Rye, NY. A proprietor was one of a company organized to purchase land from the Indians, to live on the lands and to dispose of them as a group. In a petition dated October 2, 1662, he signed his name, William Woodhull. William in 1684 gave a deed of land in Rye, NY to son Samuel, and a deed of land to son John in 1693, also in Rye, NY.

William, at his death, gave half his property to oldest son John, and the other half to be divided by his other sons.

Since Isaac aligned with the English and relocated to Canada, it would be likely that the Odell/Tomkins referred would be the line of Jonathan and Mary Tompkins Odell: Article 1: The Odell Rochambeau House - 425 Ridge Road - Hartsdale, 10530 - Westchester County - Dating back to 1732, George Washington and the Count de Rochambeau met here during the summer of 1781 to plan the battle of Yorktown. The house is now a museum by appointment only, containing colonial era artifacts, farm implements, tools and household items. (Source: HV/Net - Hudson Valley Network.) This house was built by John Tompkins and is also referred to as the Tompkins-Odell House and is still standing. The Sons of the American Revolution currently own the home. Article 2: "The Odell House, which served as Rochambeau's headquarters during a six-week period in 1781, is currently being restored by the New York Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. Sections of the historic building were opened to the public this summer, according to Robert J. Stackpole, chairman of the SAR's Odell House-Rochambeau Committee, and the work should be completed by 1976.

Located in New York's Westchester County, the Odell House was the site where the final alliance of American and French forces was forged. It was here that Rochambeau magnanimously offered one-half of his military fund to Washington when the Continental Army was on the verge of bankruptcy -- an offer that was gratefully accepted.

From July 6, 1781 until August 18 the house was occupied by Lt. Gen. Jean Baptiste Donatien de Vimeau, Count de Rochambeau, a French military hero who had been sent to the United States in 1780 to command a French expeditionary force of 5,000.

After a year of inactivity in Newport, Rhode Island, Rochambeau's forces joined Washington's Continental Army in Westchester. Washington favored a seige of New York. Rochambeau, upon finding the reduced number of troops at Washington's disposal, did not share his optimism for a successful battle for New York. The two armies waited for nearly six weeks until word came that Admiral de Grasse and the French Navy were off the coast of Virginia and would support any action in that region. Washington and Rochambeau conferred and agreed upon action against Cornwallis in Virginia.

The final stumbling block to Washington was that he had no hard currency to pay his troops and feared that most of them would refuse to make the long march south. Rochambeau then gave Washington half of his own military fund. The combined armies marched from Westchester on August 8 and arrived at Yorktown September 28.

The Odell family owned the property until 1965. Miss Elizabeth W. Odell (1882 - 1973) deeded the homestead, approximately one acre of land, and a collection of colonial furnishings and family mementoes to the New York Chapter. Sons of the American Revolution, on July 29, 1965 with the sole provision that the chapter seek to achieve its preservation and restoration for the historical education of future generations of Americans.

I leave to my wife Billaise one cow, three sheep and two lambs. To my daughter Judith, two heifers, three sheep and one lamb. To my son William, my cane and rapier and four pairs of silver shirt buttons and one pair of silver buckles. To my son Thomas, one heifer, two cows, two lambs and one gun. I appoint Isaac Contire, of Pelham, and JONATHAN ODELL, of Eastchester, executors, to take care of all my lands, messuages and tenements until my children are of age, and then to dispose of it to them.
