Gothelo (or Gozelo) (c. 967 – 19 April 1044), called the Great, was the duke of Lower Lorraine from 1023 and of Upper Lorraine from 1033.

The name of Gothelo's wife is not known, the name Barbe de Lebarten (and in fact her entire ancestry), being a spurious concoction of later genealogists.

He had the following children:

1. Godfrey the Bearded, duke of Upper Lorraine
2. Gothelo, duke of Lower Lorraine
3. Frederick, later Pope Stephen IX
4. Regilinda, married Albert II, Count of Namur
5. Oda, married Lambert II, Count of Leuven
6. Matilda, married Henry I, Count Palatine of Lotharingia

Disputed Identity

She was the wife of Gothelo I "the Great", duke of Lorraine and the mother of Frederick of Lorraine, pope Stephen IX. She was probably also the mother of all of his other children, as he was a pious Christian who fought in the Crusades. As Junca d'Ivrea, formerly known (by Latin Americans?) as Urraca d'Ivrea, she has been asserted to be a daughter of Willa of Tuscany and Berengar II of Ivrea, king of Italy. (See chart link).

In his genealogy chart Table II, POPES FROM IMPERIAL HOUSES, the author clearly has JUNCA D'IVREA properly represented as the wife of GOZELO I of LORRAINE and the daughter of WILLA and BERENGAR II (d. 966) and the mother of POPE STEPHEN IX (1057-58).

“We have two chroniclers, M. Richard de Wassebourg, published 21 dec.1549 and Henri Abraham Chatelain published 1 januari 1708, whom both had charters that they followed, the later one, did not copy the first author, as he got his sources straight from the keeper of those sources at that time. Both names Junca as the wife, daughter of Berenger II, both names the 3 sons, both corresponds well with each other, and both gives the year 1044 as the death of Gothelo.”
