From a Dutch community near Ulster County New York. Name was coined to be used in some records of marriage and birth in early 1700's. Prior to this, surnames were not used often . For example, the witness to birth of Geesje April 15, 1705 is identified as Tryntje Oostrande (page 74, # 1500) . From records of old Dutch Church of Kingston. In 1728 adam Ostrander and Catrina Ostrander were witnesses to Baptism of Rachel Sept 30, daughter of Johannes Van Etten and Rebekka Ostrander. (page 176 # 3785)
Name was spelled many different ways in early decades of use. Today, the descendants of Pieter Ostrander and Rebecca Traphagen have a family association that published a book listing thousands of pedigrees back to the marriage of 1679.
