Paus /ˈpæʉs/ is principally a well-known Norwegian family from Oslo, arguably the only surviving family to hail from the medieval city of Oslo, and known for its connection to playwright Henrik Ibsen. For centuries the family were among the foremost of the regional elite of Telemark, the "aristocracy of officials." The name Paus is attested in Oslo since the 14th century, and is believed to be of Low German origin; the earliest certain ancestors of the current family were two brothers from Oslo born in the late 16th century who both became priests.
