The Ridgeway surname originated in England and is a local name derived from any of the places so named as in Devonshire and Somerset. In general, a local name was either assumed by an individual from the patrimonial estate, if he held land, or it was bestowed by others on whose place of residence or birth it was and who had subsequently moved. Thus, the surname simply denotes one who came from Ridgway. The Placename Ridgway is derived from the Old English compound "hrycgweg" which means literally, "ridge way", i.e. the road over the back of a hill.
