About the Thorne surname

Benjamin Thorne, born in Sherbourne, Dorset, England, son of Benjamin Thorne and Henrietta Wigginton, emigrated to Upper Canada around 1820 to join his sister Susanna and her husband William Parsons. He settled in Vaughn Township, village later called Thornhill, the Parsons family lived across the street but in Markham Twp. Benjamin was very involved in buying and building farms and mills, and shipping crops to England. He donated land for Trinity Church, died in 1848, buried in the churchyard in Thornhill. He married Anna Maria Lodge Wilcocks in 1831, in York, daughter of John Lodge Wilcocks and Anna Maria Merriman. They had nine children. Details in Candian Dic Bio,
