Problem with this page?

I discovered this while playing around today:
You can add a column for "birth location" to the list of profiles, then sort on it. This will sort on country name as most significant part.

Unfortunately, it seems that the "?page=50" trick (adding it to the URL) resets the column. Perhaps someone can come up with a more "cooked" URL to achieve this effect?

Interesting and useful to know. Thanks Harald

Is this the answer to our long-standing request for place-names search capablilities? Can you break down the process a bit, Harald?

re: adding a column:

In the "Advanced Search" options (along the left side of the screen), near the bottom is an option called "add a column".

There are a number of choices 'pre-defined'; the last one of those is a 'catch-all' to add almost any of the known columns.

(The "last login" is *not* one of the choices, though, so you can't use this feature to order the list of "claimed family" by the most-recent users, unfortunately.)

Is this a feature for PRO members only? I am a Geni Basic member, and don't see any form called "Advanced Search" with the option to "add a column", though can see a Search page which is titled "Advanced Search", but the search form itself is entitled "Search":
http://www.geni.com/search/advanced

A 'starting point' for lists is the "Family" menu at the top of the Geni window.

Under that is "Lists"

Once that initial list is generated (of your 'family'), there should be an option (in small text) to "show advanced controls".

That adds a 'yellow' column on the left side where the options are located. The "Columns" is the last one in the "Refine This List" section (after Focus Person & Group). In that you should see Filters, Profile Information, Events, and Columns.

Note that one can change the Focus Person.

Thanks, Dan. I actually use that Search all the time, but never realized that the Columns section at the bottom controlled the view on the right. Now you've pointed it out, it is obvious, and I can't believe I didn't notice and use the features!! I can see that I will be using columns such as "Last modified" in future.

Google offers another useful search function. Try putting this in the Google search box. www.geni.com: Chudenice

Just as a matter of interest, Google indexes Geni practically instantaneously.

Thank you--Very interesting, I will try these tactics. Another idea that you can use with a free Geni membership is this:
If you think of a famous person that you think you might be related to-- Google the name and Geni.com. When something comes up, click on it. It will take you into their Geni profile. Then on the top middle of the page, it will ask if you want o find out if you are connected. You click on this and it automatically takes you through numerous generations and gives you the connection on their family tree (connection to you). Unfortunately with a free membership--it will not save onto your Geni Family Tree. but you can cut and paste and keep the string of relatives in your own files on your computer. It is kind of a fun find.

Jeanne ... if Geni finds a connection between you & that 'famous' profile, then it exists! Those profiles are already connected to you; they are not only a part of "your" family tree, but also (more importantly) a part of the SHARED World Family Tree.

So you don't even need to (nor want to create duplicates!) make a copy on Geni. That's the whole point of Geni -- one profile for each person, no duplicates, and containing the best information from all the contributors to that profile.

Thanks for pointing out this way to sort the relevant profiles. I will use it and maybe this will make this big project with a lot of profiles easier to manage and to use a swap.

I normally try to really swap so for every profile I add I try to remove one or more from the project.

Also it helps to find quickly the profiles that are in the wrong project.
