About John Blount, of Deddington
John Blount of Deddington, Esq [1395-2 May 1442], had an elder half brother [by his father's first wife Juliana] ALSO named John Blount [1377-bef 1425]
Sir John Blount [aft 1345-4 April 1425] rather confusingly had 2 sons, both named John Blount; one from his first wife Juliana & one from his second wife Isabel. To ad to the confusion, by the time Sir John Blount died, the elder of his two sons named John had died, leaving a 14 year old son [Sir John's Grandson] as his heir.
Fortunately, there are some detailed Inquisition Post Mortem to sort out the inheritance.
John Blount [1395-2 May 1442], son of Sir John Blount & his second wife Isabel Cornewall inherited considerable estates, including Kinlet, from his Cornewall relatives, as Isabel's brothers died without issue. He does not seem to have been knighted, as all records and his multiple IPM refer to him as John Blount, Esq, of Deddington.
He married Alice de la Bere, daughter of Kynard de la Bere & his IPM in 1443 found that his son & heir was Humphrey, aged 20. http://www.inquisitionspostmortem.ac.uk/view/inquisition/26-045/48 [further detail there] JOHN BLOUNT OF DEDDINGTON, ESQUIRE n014 45 Writ. 9 May 1443. [Bate]. WORCESTERSHIRE. Inquisition [indented]. Droitwich. 20 October 1443. [Littylton]. Jurors: Thomas Marchall ; Peter Cassy ; William Brase ; Thomas Wode ; Edmund Creswall ; John Furnyng ; Richard Clerke ; Simon Gaye ; Roger Sharp ; John Wheler ; Thomas Bulvynche ; and Richard Baker .
He held no lands or tenements in demesne or in service of the king or of any other.
He died on 2 May last. Humphrey Blount is his son and next heir, aged 20 and more on 25 November last.

- WE have before seen, that SIR JOHN BLOUNT, of Sodington, the grand-son of Sir Walter le Blount of Rock, had two wives, Juliana Fowleshurst, and Isabella Cornwall, and perhaps a third named Helen, and that the Sodington branch was descended from his issue by the first wife. The branch of which I am now treating proceeded from his second wife.
- This was Isabella, the daughter of Sir Bryan Cornwall, whom he married in the sixth year of Richard the Second, 1384. The Cornwalls were descended from Richard, Earl of Cornwall, and King of the Romans, the second son of King John. His son Edmund, Earl of Cornwall, had a natural son, Sir Richard Cornwall, who, by his wife Joan, was father of Sir Edmund Cornwall, and Sir Geoffrey Cornwall. Sir Geoffrey was the ancestor of the Barons of Burford, in Shropshire. Sir Edmund Cornwall, who died in the twenty-eighth year of Edward the Third, 1354:, married Elizabeth, the daughter and co-heir of Sir Bryan Brampton, by whom he acquired the mansion and manor of Kinlet, in Shropshire. Besides Edmund, who died without issue, and Peter, their son and heir, was Sir Bryan Cornwall, Lord of Kinlet, who died in the fifteenth year of Richard the Second, 1391. His wife was Maud the daughter of the Lord Strange, and their sons Sir John Cornwall, Thomas, Henry, and Bryan, having died without male issue, Isabella their daughter inherited Kinlet. The arms of Brampton were, or, two lions passant, gules. Cornwall bore those of Richard, Earl of Cornwall, argent, a lion rampant, gules, crowned with a ducal coronet, or ; which were the arms of Poictou. And within a bordure ingrailed sable, charged with besants,

- which were those of the ancient Earls of Cornwall. Sir Geoffrey Cornwall, having taken prisoner the Duke of Britanny, had the field of his arms changed from argent to ermine, being the arms of Britanny, and so it was borne by his descendants*.
- It is before mentioned, that, upon his marriage with Isabella, Sir John Blount settled upon her the estates at Ratterley, Fenton, Kilward, Bydulf, Romesore, Denston, Glaston, Wyshall, Waterfall, and Balterderley, all in Staffordshire, and which estates are therefore hereafter found in the possession of the Blounts of Kinlet.
- By Isabella he had two sons, John and Roger b .
- Of Roger I know nothing farther than that amongst the possessions of the convent of Croxton in the town of Leicester, as described in the register of that Abbey, there appears a rent of eighteen pence, two hens, and a cock, of the gift of Roger Blund, perhaps the same person, and which was paid by Warinus out of certain lands which had been granted by Warinus to the Abbey c .
- JOHN BLOUNT, Esquire, of Kinlet and Dodington in the same county, married Alice, the daughter of Kynard de la Bere of Herefordshire, whose arms were azure, a bend, argent, cottised, or, between six martlets of the third d. In the seventh year of Henry the Sixth, 1428, John Blount, son and heir of Sir John Blount, Knight, and of Isabella his wife, was found to have held lands in Balterderley, Culvard, Romesore, and Bidulf, in the county of Stafford c . He died in the twenty-first year of Henry the Sixth, 1442, and upon the inquisition held, he was found to have possessed Balterderley, Kilvart, Lentin, Romesore, and Bidulf, and that Humphrey was his son and heir, and of the age of twenty years f .
- John Blount, and Alicia de la Bere, had five sons, and five daughters. Humphrey, John, Edward, William, and Charles. Isabella married to John Kyene, Anne to William Gayton, Maria to John Pigott, Eleanor to John Cheyney of Chesham, and Margaret to John Oteley. .... etc.

- Blount died on 4 Apr. 1425. His lands in Worcestershire were left in trust to his 14-year-old grandson John (the child of his son John by his first wife), while those in Staffordshire passed to another son named John (aged 30), the issue of his marriage to Isabel Cornwall. (The latter John Blount died in 1443 leaving a son Humphrey, who subsequently inherited the extensive Cornwall estates in Shropshire and elsewhere.)5

- .... Kinlet was then passed down to Isabel, sister of Sir John Cornwall and second wife of Sir John Blount II. Sir John Blount II had a son with Isabel, also named John. John inherited Kinlet after his father's death. The estate was passed onto Humphery Blount (grandson of Sir John Blount and his marriage with Isabel) in 1453.[6][7][8]
- Sir George Blount inherited Kinlet in 1531, on the death of his father, John.[9] In 1581, Sir George Blount gave Kinlet to Rowland Lacon, son of his eldest sister Agnes, married to Sir Richard Lacon, instead of his only surviving child, Dorothy.[5] At his death, Rowland Lacon was succeeded by his son, Sir Francis Lacon, who married Jane, daughter of the Viscount of Montague in 1589.

_________________
The property of John Blount in Deddington (following Colvin, p. 108) consisted of 5 messuages, 300 acres of arable, 16 acres of meadow, 50 acres of pasture and 2 acres of wood in Deddington, Clifton and Hempton. Other sources say that in 1430/1 a John Gilbert gave to John Blount and his wife Alice a tenement called Tankervilles and various lands in Deddington, all bought of Roger Draper's son John. In 1432/3 John Blount owned 12 cows in Deddington (VCH, Oxon).
Colvin believes that John Blount's property in Deddington may have gone to his wife in dower after his death, and that "the Deddington property was certainly held in dower by a later lady of the family" (Colvin, op. cit., p. 108 note)
From another source (VCH Oxon.?) after the death of John Blount (1443) "Blount's manor" went to younger son John (II) and in 1489 the estate was sold by a Charles Blount to John Bustard and John Billing.
John Blount I was also in possession of Balterley, Staffs. at this time.
