Added by Elwin Nickerson II about my Great Grandfather:
WILLIAM CHASE'S LIFE IN YARMOUTH, CAPE COD, MASS. Taken from "The Town of Yarmouth, Massachusetts: A History, 1639-1989 by Marion Vuilleumier, Pub. by the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth on the occasion of the 350 anniversary of the Town , 1989, p. 4. The permanent settlement authorized by the court began January 7, 1639 when ten men were given permission to "take up freedom at Yarmouth." These were Anthony Thacher, John Crowe, Thomas Howes, John Coite, Madrick Matthews, Philip Tabor, William Palmer, Samuel Rider, William Lumpkin, and Thomas Hatch. That March four more men were mentioned as from Yarmouth: Nicholas Simpkins, Hugh Tilley, Giles Hopkins (son of Stephen), and Joshua Barnes, Andrew Hallet received a land grant in May. Thomas Payne and William Chase were added in June, p.5. Called to Service- Drummer 1645- Lite Horse AFoot- Regiment- Rhode Island Expedition-
William Chase was chosen Constable and William Palmer was designated to "exercise the inhabitants in the use of arms by court order. "
p. 11 The first houses were small and cheaply constructed. A good example was the house built in 1639 near the present Mill Lane. William Chase contracted to build it for Thomas Starr, who sold it before completion to Andrew Hallet. Chase agreed to deliver it thatched, studded, and latched, daubing excepted, for ten pounds. Twenty-nine acres of land were included in the deal. Swift says the structure probably had one room on each floor, was daubed in the crevices with clay, and had oiled paper at the windows.
In Yarmouth, Ma. where William settled there is a Chase Creek, and there are Chase Gardens all named after this family.
comment from Anderson's Great Migration Begins Project
All of the dates for the son William Chase are rough estimates and largely unsupported by contemporary evidence. This William's apparent eldest child, another William, was married by the early 1670s, and would therefore have been born about 1645, which roughly dates the first marriage of William Chase, the son of the immigrant, and also suggests a year of birth for the son of the immigrant. In his article of 1933 John Carroll Chase stated that "it has been claimed that the four youngest children of William Chase were born of his second wife," but no evidence other than this is offerred [NEHGR 87:50]. The evidence for the list of children for this William is itself slim, and so all dates for this William are subject to alteration.
Arrived 1630
