About William Patrick
Seen as son of John Kilpatrick of Ayrshire & Marian Sempill without supporting evidence.
John Patrick, died 1638, (son of William Patrick), obtained a grant of land of Overmain, near Kilwinning, from the monastery, aquired by charter in 1605, the estate of Byres in Ayrshire and subsequently part of the Dalgarven.
William Patrick, the first of this family, obtained from the Monastery a grant of the lands of Overmains, near Kilwinning. He was succeeded by his son, John Patrick. The charter of Overmains, in favour of John Patrick, and Eupham Roger, his spouse, is dated in 1602. He also acquired the lands of Byres, which had belonged to the Monastery, and obtained a charter of them, in favour of him and his wife, in 1605. He afterwards acquired part of the lands of Dalgarven. He died in 1638, leaving five sons, to each of whom he gave landed property-
It is unclear precisely where Overmains is, as I have not been able to identify the precise location on any maps. It appears to have been something noteworthy, and was possibly located North of Kilwinning Abbey, as the lands to the south of the Abbey are identified on the map as Nether Mains. The main thoroughfare through Kilwinning town is also sometimes referred to as the Main, so Overmains could be referring to that somehow.
John Burke implies, through notes in his book, that most of the genealogical information about this family came first hand from Dr. Robert Patrick, esq. of Trearne and Hazlehead (Hassilhead/Hessilhead), (1765-1838) who was still alive at the time of his first publication in 1835, and was active in the Historical and Archaeological societies of Ayrshire during that time, publishing several books himself.
Note: The Birth Dates of many people in this Patrick Line are incorrect, dates made up to fit a narrative told by Dr. Lee Wellington Patrick, but dates that do not match with the source material. Burke's Landed Gentry contains the dates many in this line inherited their property, meaning after the death of the parent, but most contain no actual birth or death dates.
